We are your source for custom pins and patches!

Eagle River Designs has been producing custom lapel pins and patches for agencies and organizations related to our public lands since 1985. Our primary focus is on our National Parks, Monuments, Historic Sites and related areas, including growing attention to our National Wildlife Refuge System. Our business has grown steadily by offering a quality product at very reasonable prices combined with the most personal service you can get.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Products

Eagle River Designs is proud to supply lapel pins to our National Wildlife Refuges and related Friends’ groups. We have available volunteer pins at hour levels from basic to 10,000 hours, USFWS Shield pins, Blue Goose pins, and through 2003, pins commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Wildlife Refuge System.

The most popular and fastest growing area of our business with the refuges is supplying custom pins. These pins are designed just for your refuge. They are becoming increasingly popular as souvenirs, collectibles, membership pins, and as a reward for volunteers. With increasing needs for fundraising, they can be one of the most profitable items friends’ groups can sell if they have a sales outlet.

Also of interest to those refuges with sales outlets is our line of "Natural Impressions" pins. This series is being developed to give refuges a ready source for stock pins with subjects of interest to their refuge. You can order these profitable pins only as you need them, without the financial commitment of a custom pin. This series of bird and animal designs is young, but growing, based on requests from individual refuges. Please visit that page for availability and pricing. Friends’ groups get 10% off the normal wholesale pricing!

Custom Enamel Pins

If you are thinking of designing your own custom lapel pin, the best way to start is by calling us. It’s much easier to get all your questions answered that way. If you prefer, you can email or send your design to us. We’ll look it over and offer suggestions (if necessary) on how to adapt your art to the size of a lapel pin. We will help you from whatever stage your design is at. For hints on designing a pin, see below.

Common questions include:

How big should the pin be?

To some extent this depends on the design. However, a good all round size is 1" in the longest dimension. This size is wearable, but usually big enough to see the design. It is also cost effective. The pin can be made as small or as large as you want if you have a special need.

What shape can the pin be?

It can be made in almost any shape. It can even have “holes” in the pin if the design calls for that. Normally, the shape has no bearing on cost.

How many colors can I use?

There is not a limit on colors, but practically it’s a good idea to try to keep the colors to 7 or less.

How much detail can we get into the pin?

This is one of the most difficult things to judge. Simpler designs are better and will show better in such a small size. However, there are processes which will allow an amazing amount of detail. It’s best just to talk to us about it and let us look at the design.

What is the minimum order size?

You can order as few as 100 pieces.

What is the production time?

Try to give yourself two months. If you have a deadline, talk to us. We can often rush an order.

Hints for Designing a Pin

1) Simpler designs are usually better.
2) Try to visualize the design at only one inch in size. Sometimes reducing the design on a copier can help.
3) Shapes other than round or square are usually more interesting. If an element of the design can “stick out” the side or top, that works well.
4) Remember that every color needs to be separated from the color next to it by a thin metal line.
5) The most common problem in designs is the desire for colored lettering other than the gold, black or silver of the metal of the pin. This can be done through a printing process over the enamel and looks quite nice. It costs slightly more to do this.
6) Vertical shapes work better than horizontal shapes in larger sizes because it is easier for them to hang straight. Horizontal shapes sometimes require two back attachments.
7) Black plating makes colors stand out more. Gold plating makes some designs look richer.
8) You can combine different colors in one order to represent different hour levels for awards, for instance, or just to see what colors you like best for future reorders. (For example, the background color of 20 pins could be blue, while the background color for 50 is red, 10 have green, etc.)

Custom Patches

The best way to start with the process is to call us. It’s easier to get all your questions answered and get you started on the right track. It’s also helpful to email or send your design or sketch to us. We’ll be happy to look it over and offer suggestions as to adapting the design to the patch making process. Here are some of the commonly asked questions:

How large should the patch be?

This really depends on what the final use will be. A common size is 3 inches. This size fits most hats, shirt sleeves, backpacks, etc. However, a patch can be as large as you want. Most designs are more limited in how small they can be, however. There is a lower limit to how small lettering and other details can be stitched.

What shape can the patch be?

It can be any shape, but round and rectangular are easiest to sew on.

How many colors can I use?

Up to 12, but consider that the cost of a patch depends on quantity, size, and number of colors. Up to 7 colors is the same price. Over that many will cost extra. Also, it is usually true that simpler designs with fewer colors look best.

What is the minimum number I can order?

You can order as few as 100 pieces. You pay more per piece for smaller orders.

What is the production time?

Usually it takes about 7 weeks to produce your order. However, if you have a deadline to meet, tell us. We’ll see what we can do.

Hints for Designing a Custom Patch

1) Simpler designs work best.
2) Round and Square or Rectangular patches are easiest to sew on.
3) Very small lettering can be hard to stitch so it looks good. Try to make letters reasonably large.
4) It is more difficult to match colors with threads than with the enamels in pins. Be prepared to accept colors that aren’t exactly what you see in your art.
